Abstract
80 young people(11.950¡¾2.609, 160 eyes) who could wear orthokeratology contact lens(OK lens) every day for at least 8 hours and have no eye diseases were chosen among Lucid CH1 lens wearers and checked with a slit lamp and measured objective and subjective refraction errors, corneal thickness and corneal radius before OK lens wear and after one day, one week, two weeks, one month, three months and six months of OK lens wear to assess the effectiveness and safety of OK lenses. The results are as follows.
There is a high correlation(r = 0.962, p < 0.0001) between weak principal meridian and base curve of prescribed OK lens, and unaided visual acuity improved continuously during OK lens wear. Spherical equivalent refractive errors and the degree of astigmatism were reduced significantly(p = 0.000) from -2.397¡¾1.096 and 0.267¡¾0.340D to -0.036¡¾ 0.261D, -0.023¡¾0.123D respectively after 6 months of OK lens wear. Corneal thickness was decreased about 16.4¡¾2.83 ¥ìm after 6 months of OK lens wear.
The corrected refractive error shows medium correlation(R = 0.467~0.482) with the corneal radius during the lens wear but with the corneal thickness change shows medium correlation(R = 0.556) after one week, and high correlation(R = 0.719~0.882) after two weeks of OK lens wear. During OK lens wear, corneal erosion for 16 eyes(10%), corneal staining for 22 eyes(13.8%) and giant papillary conjunctivitis for 12 eyes(7.5%) were occurred.
From the above results, it is shown that in the teenagers wearing OK lenses, the visual acuity was improved rapidly compared with the that of adult and the visual acuity improvement is strong correlation with the changes of the corneal thickness.
There was no problems to cause serious corneal damage but some side effects were occurred like corneal staining in the early stage of OK lens wear that it is important to educate the guardians as well as the lens wearers in the case of young teenagers.
